California is Tyler's most successful unreleased project ever made, including features like Kid Cudi, Lil Wayne, Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, Freddie Gibbs, Thundercat, Frank Ocean, Mac Miller, Boldy James, Earl Sweatshirt, Aesop Rock, and Anderson .Paak.

California is the mark Tyler, the Creator's unreleased alternative hip hop sound, Critics have compared to the album's sound to describe to alternative hip hop and rap. The album's songs highlights Tyler's sampling. in his song Explain to Me (which featured Lil Wayne), he sampled an episode of Cardcaptor Sakura about Sakura and her friend getting to a fight. in his second song Problems (which featured Kid Cudi), he sampled Father Stretch my Hands Pt. 1 by Kanye West as the intro, then when the intro was cut off, Tyler said "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Shut the **** up! anyways, beat that my *****." and then Suzie Thundertussy plays as the Kanye West's No More Parties in LA speed pitch. in his song A-C-T, he sampled Homage by Mild High Club and sped up and chopped "Someone wrote this song before, And I could tell you where it's from, The 4-7-3-6-2-5-1 to put my mind at ease". and then repeated it. in his sixth song State (which featured Freddie Gibbs and Frank Ocean), he sampled BADBADNOTGOOD's Chompy Paradise and sped it up to 45 pitch speed, and then repeated it. in his seventh song Don't You Worry? (which featured Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky), he sampled Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time by The Delfonics, sped up and chopped the verse "Didn't I blow your mind this time, didn't I? (Oh, baby), Didn't I blow your mind this time, didn't I?" and repeated it. in his tenth song On the Same Line, he sampled an episode of Duckman named "Kidney, Popsicle, and Nuts (1997)", and chopped "Duckman? Duckman?! This is serious. I have to get you to a doctor immediately." as the intro.
