BuckyBarnes - Winter Soldier
There are things from the Winter Soldier days that I'm just remembering. Weapons left in the field... Dangers I can still prevent. I think maybe that's the path... A way to the redemption I've been looking for.
~ Bucky Barnes

James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes is a character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Originally introduced as a sidekick to Captain America, the character was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby and first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (cover-dated March 1941) (which was published by Marvel's predecessor, Timely Comics). Barnes' original costume (or one based on it) and the Bucky nickname have been used by other heroes in the Marvel Universe over the years.

The character is brought back from supposed death as the brainwashed assassin cyborg called the Winter Soldier (created by Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting) (Russian: Зимний Солдат, translit. Zimniy Soldát). The character's memories and personality are later restored, leading him to become a dark hero in search of redemption. He temporarily assumes the role of Captain America when Steve Rogers was presumed to be dead. During the 2011 crossover Fear Itself, Barnes is injected with the Infinity Formula, which increases his natural vitality and physical traits in a way similar to (but less powerful than) the super-soldier serum used on Captain America. After coming into contact with the shadowy Outer Circle, Barnes becomes their New Revolution, bringing the organization down from within.

Sebastian Stan plays the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Ant-Man (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Black Panther (2018), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019), the miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), the animated series What If...? (2021), and the upcoming film Thunderbolts* (2025).

  • Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier is a main character in The Thunderbolts, with Sebastian Stan reprising his role.
  • Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier makes a non-speaking appearance in the Disney+ TV movie Marvel's Superhero Adventures: Infinity War. He is mentioned to be in a relationship with Black Widow. Additionally, Bucky's origins as Winter Soldier are mentioned as a concept for Thanos's schemes of brainwashing the captured Thunderbolts as super-soldier cyborgs for the new Black Order. Winter Soldier himself makes an appearance in the film's climax, participating the final battle against Thanos's army of Klyntauri. In the epilogue, he is shown with Black Widow working on finding a cure for the surviving Black Order members' brainwashing. They are later seen among the heroes attending Jessica Reilly's marriage with Alana Jobson.
  • Bucky (as Winter Soldier) appears in Marvel: All New, All Different Chronicles, voiced by Troy Baker. This version is renamed James "Bucky" Rogers, and is Steve Rogers's biological older brother, and an enhanced soldier who reemerged as a knight with ice abilities after being thought to have been killed in action during World War II, until it was revealed he was in frozen suspended animation and revived and enhanced by the Ice Elves. Along with enhanced strength and speed, Bucky also wields an Asgardian rapier sword made of components from ancient Frost Giant weapons. Despite his long absence, he soon reunited with his brother and resumed to live a life on modern world both as a citizen and a superhero. He is also a teacher and trainer at S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy, and is married with Carol Danvers's sister Sharon, with whom he has two daughters named Barbara (or "Barbie" for short) and Margaret (or “Peggy” for short).
  • Winter Soldier appears in Marvel's The Avenging Spider-Man, voiced by Troy Baker. He is a playable character in the "Cold Claws" DLC story alongside Black Cat and the Punisher.
  • Winter Soldier is a playable character in Marvel Superhero Adventures: Intergalactic Grand Prix, voiced by Yuri Lowenthal. One of the superheroes participating the titular racing tournament hosted by the Grandmaster, Winter Soldier owns two karts: the Silver Wolf (a grey modified motorcycle with a wolf head, and a U.S.A. flag in the rear) and the Ghost Commando (a grey and red sportscar resembling a 2014 Chevrolet Corvette C7 Stingray, with a red star in the front).
