Plot[]
The film begins thousands of years before the main events of the film, on a planet called Mobius in another universe. Captain Hawke Aztrak leads a revolt against Pachacamac, chief of their tribe. His revolt is motivated by the dysfunctional social structure of the society in which Echidnas like Pachacamac are the wealthy and respected and the humanoids like Hawke are disrespected and forcefully put into the military. Hawke plans to unleash Chaos, a metaphysical entity worshipped by the Mobians as the deity of destruction and evil. Hawke fights Pachacamac and eventually kills him. Hawke then goes after Princess Tikal, Pachacamac’s daughter, who had created the “Chaos Emeralds”, which would conceal Chaos and put an end to evil. Before he can do that, Hawke’s son Alexander intervenes. It is then revealed to Hawke that Alexander and Tikal were secretly in love and Alexander had gotten her pregnant. Enraged at his son, Hawke tries to punch Alexander, but Alexander fights him. By the end of the fight, Hawke accidentally kills his son and stabs Tikal. After the death of his son, Hawke wants to let Chaos kill him, but Chaos, using water for a physical being, attacks him. Tikal then activates the Chaos Emeralds and Chaos is absorbed into the emeralds, along with Hawke. Tikal then uses a machine to cut her unborn child out of her and put it into a stasis chamber, hoping that it will survive. Tikal then falls on the floor dead, and the palace floods.
Thousands of years later on Mobius, the hedgehog species is one of the only left existing intelligent species on the planet. “Sonic” is the name of a five-year-old hedgehog that lives on South Island, who likes to run. One day, there is an attack on their village. In desperation, Sonic’s mother takes him to the temple on the mountain. She puts him into a chamber of the temple, where the Chaos Emeralds surround him. She then says a prayer in their language, and the chamber activates, sending Sonic to another universe. Sonic lands in a pool on Earth. He is found by a young boy named Chris Kindal. Chris takes in the young hedgehog and the family takes him in. Unbeknownst to Sonic, the Chaos Emeralds were transported as well.
Twelve years later, Sonic has adapted to human life, and uses the human name Greg Kindal. He was able to disguise as a human using a device that attached to his wrist and gave him a human form. Chris comes back to visit Greg and his parents. Chris reveals that he works at G.U.N. (The Guardian Units of Nations), which is a military agency. Chris mentions that they had found an island in the ocean that had never been discovered before, and that they are deeply investigating it.
Greg sneaks into Chris’s G.U.N. plane and secretly heads with them to the island. He sneaks away from the G.U.N. officers and finds a temple. He goes inside and recognizes it as the temple that he was put in as a child. The island, known as “Angel Island”, had been a piece of land from Mobius that was cut out when Sonic was sent to Earth. He looks around and finds a glowing stone on the ground. The stone is the green Chaos Emerald. He takes it with him. Chris’s G.U.N. Unit also find the blue Chaos Emerald.
Greg researches what the stone is and finds several cases where these mysterious gems were found. He believes that if he finds all of them, than he can use them to return to Mobius and be with his mother again. He visits several areas around the world to look for them. One of the emeralds is in a bank in Station Square. He plans to take it at night. When he is about to take it, the bank is attacked by robbers. Greg cuts the lights, quickly turns into Sonic, and takes down the robbers. He then takes the emerald and leaves.
The next day, Greg takes off the wrist device and goes out to a distant field. He starts to run, and notices that on Earth, his speed has increased a thousand-fold. He can run incredibly fast and jump incredibly far. He then decides that he should try and use his powers to protect people, and he puts his emerald-hunting aside.
G.U.N. Director General Adam Markinson lands at G.U.N.’s East Base in Station Square. He came immediately from Soleanna after he heard about the emerald. Chris shows Markinson the blue emerald, and Markinson seems to know about it. Markinson then tells his agents about Dr. Julian Kintobor, a robotics scientist who used to design airships for G.U.N. He reveals that Kintobor had gone off the grid a year before and that he was last seen in Soleanna, an island nation near Italy. Markinson and a few agents went to Soleanna and found Kintobor’s lab abandoned, but with a videotape left in it. The videotape showed Kintobor claiming that he was going to “build an empire” and that Julian Kintobor is no longer, and that he is now known as Dr. Robotnik. Markinson said that Robotnik could possibly be returning to Station Square with “God knows what”.
Sonic has continued to help people, barely showing his face. People have called him the “Blue Blur”, since they only see a flash of blue light. But one day he saves a falling boy, and stays there for a few seconds and people see his actual self. People had gotten video of it, and it was quickly broadcasted on the news, getting the attention of Chris.
Chris finds Greg and asks him about what he’s doing. During their conversation, Robotnik’s fleet of ships begins to dawn over Station Square. Robotnik’s mothership begins to descend lower than the other ships. Robotnik broadcasts video of him onto every TV in Station Square, and announces that he is taking over the city, and will take violent action if the Chaos Emeralds are not given to him.
Chris goes to East Base and brings Greg, in Sonic form, with him. Chris insists to Agent Topaz that Sonic can help stop Robotnik. Topaz reveals that Markinson had already ordered a strike on Robotnik’s backup fleet that still remained in orbit. The “attack from behind” tactic had G.U.N. pilots take airships into the atmosphere and try to shoot at Robotnik’s backup fleet. However, Robotnik’s fleet proves to be better, and shoots down every last G.U.N. ship.
The next day, Robotnik broadcasts again and says that after the disturbance, they have forced him to take violent action. Robotnik orders three of his ships to open fire on Station Square civilians. The ships fire rockets at the city and end up killing over 600 civilians. Robotnik then broadcasted again and said that that was a “warning” and that those casualties could double if he was further provoked.
In desperation, General Markinson decides to give him the Chaos Emerald. He sends Agent Topaz and several G.U.N. soldiers to give Robotnik the Emerald. Robotnik comes down in a small hovering device along with three E-100 android bodyguards. When Robotnik sees that there is only one emerald, he is angry and asks where the rest of them are. Topaz says that she thought there was only one, and Robotnik thinks that she is playing dumb. Robotnik ascends back to the ship and announces that he is putting forth his second act of violence. Hundreds of E-100 androids descend upon the city and begin shooting at civilians. Sonic leaves the base and goes to the city. He fights Robotnik’s army of robots and manages to save Agent Topaz. Later there were reports of only 7 casualties that day, and Markinson decides that Sonic could be useful.
That night, Dr. Robotnik is dumbfounded about Sonic. He seems to know about Mobian hedgehogs, and he wonders how he got there. He then interrogates a G.U.N. agent that he captured. There, Robotnik says that he always has his “hand on the trigger”, and that he is in control, showing that he has a God complex. He then kills the agent by electrocuting him.
Markinson holds a meeting for the agents about what they’re going to do next. Sonic tells them about the Chaos Emeralds, and how powerful they are. They conclude that Robotnik is trying to get the emeralds to use them for a weapon of some sort.
The next day, Robotnik descends upon Station Square in a large mech suit. Sonic appears soon and fights him. Sonic and Robotnik fight for a while until Sonic breaks the glass of the mech suit and demands that he know what weapon he’s using the emeralds for. Robotnik then reveals that he’s not using them for a weapon, and that he is instead using them to unleash Chaos, and find a way to control the entity. He reveals that he has knowledge of Mobius, and that he knew that Sonic was a Mobian. E-100 robots then rescue Robotnik, and Sonic returns to East Base.
Sonic informs G.U.N. about this news. He then realizes that Robotnik was in Soleanna because one of the Emeralds was in Soleanna, and Robotnik left because Sonic had already taken it. Sonic has an idea that they should use the Chaos Emeralds as a Trojan Horse to get inside Robotnik’s fleet and destroy it from the inside. Markinson approves of the idea and gives Sonic the last Chaos Emerald.
Sonic goes to the center of the city and calls down to Robotnik that he has the Chaos Emeralds. Robotnik doesn’t trust Sonic, and sends down two of his most advanced robots, E-102 Gamma and E-123 Omega, down. Gamma and Omega ambush Sonic when he gets there. Sonic fights Gamma and Omega, but their advanced combat tactics prove too much for him. Gamma and Omega get Sonic pinned down, and Sonic absorbs the Chaos Emeralds, since he now has all of them. At that moment his fur becomes golden and glowing, his eyes become red, and he can fly. Sonic, in this “super form”, manages to defeat Gamma and Omega. Sonic eventually loses control of his super form and flies far away from the downtown area.
Sonic’s super form wares off and he falls into a lake in the outskirts of the city. A G.U.N. agent nearby dives into the lake and saves Sonic from drowning. He brings Sonic out of the water, but the Chaos Emeralds stayed in the water. G.U.N. agents set up a temporary camp at the lake. Sonic is sitting down with a towel when the G.U.N. agent comes over to him and greets him. The agent reveals that his name is Miles Prower. They then talk for a little while, and Miles is fascinated by Sonic’s shape-shifting wrist device. Word then gets to the camp that they managed to capture Robotnik.
Back at East Base, Robotnik is being held in a high-tech virtually impenetrable cell. Markinson is interrogating him. There it is revealed that Robotnik wanted to get revenge on G.U.N. after they killed his grandfather, a scientist named Gerald Kintobor. Gerald had worked for G.U.N., and was eventually arrested and put in the underwater cell at Prison Island. Gerald later died in that cell. After a while during the interrogation, E-100 robots storm East Base and break Robotnik out of the “virtually impenetrable” cell.
Back at the lake camp, a figure appears in the water. The figure then reveals itself to be a bipedal lizard-like creature made of water. G.U.N. agents shoot at it, but the bullets just pass through. Sonic tries to fight the being, and is easily defeated. The being reveals itself to be Chaos, who apparently had combined with Hawke Aztrak to become a malevolent, metaphysical creature that can take an elemental form. Chaos then escapes by turning into liquid and traveling through the sewers.
Sonic and the G.U.N. crew meet back with Markinson at East Base, which is now partially destroyed. They make one final plan to stop Robotnik. They estimated that Chaos would appear in Station Square and take a full perfect form. Sonic would have to try and get the Chaos Emeralds to take a super form. Then Sonic could be able to defeat Chaos.
Back at Station Square, the sewers begin to spring out and the city floods when Chaos appears and takes his perfect form, which appears to be like a giant lizard with tentacles. Sonic gets there, and manages to absorb the Chaos Emeralds from Chaos. He then takes his super form, and finally takes on Chaos. Meanwhile G.U.N. airships start attacking Robotnik’s fleet. This time, however, they actually manage to destroy some of the ships, as well as the backup.
Sonic’s battle proves to be difficult, as Chaos manages to actually damage Sonic in his super form. Chaos attempts to drown Sonic, but Sonic uses an attack where he spins very quickly to cut through Chaos’s tentacles with his spines. He then charges his spin attack for a long time and uses it to circle around Chaos, cutting his tentacles, and eventually cutting into him and destroying him. Chaos dies, and fades away into the water.
The G.U.N. ships destroy most of the fleet, and the mothership attempts to escape. The airships cannot reach it, so Sonic, still in his super form, goes after him. He manages to do damage to the ship by redirecting heat-seeking missiles at the ship. Robotnik then gets in a newer, bigger mech suit and takes on Sonic. Sonic fights Robotnik, and eventually destroys the mothership.
Robotnik falls to Earth and lands in Station Square. Robotnik survives due to the mech suit, and is arrested by G.U.N. officers shortly after and brought to Prison Island. Sonic returns to Station Square, where the people of the city applaud him.
A few weeks later, the city’s flooding is almost driven out. Markinson agrees to having Sonic as a full-time G.U.N. agent. Afterwards, Chris and Greg go for a walk. Chris reveals that he and Agent Topaz have started dating. He also talks about another girl at G.U.N. who is a huge fan of Sonic. Chris hugs Greg, and says that he’ll be his brother no matter what. Chris then takes off Greg’s wrist device, and Greg turns into Sonic. Chris says that he doesn’t need it anymore, and Sonic runs off into the distance, ending the movie.
