Batman Unchained is an animated action-adventure series designed to be a love letter to all eras of Batman and to introduce kids to different corners of Batman's universe. Each season has 40 episodes in order to bring back a similar vibe to Batman the Animated Series.

Synopsis[]

Bruce Wayne had just returned to Gotham after spending eight years traveling the world and training as he becomes the Batman, a masked crusader as he learns of the rising supervillain population of Gotham City, having to evolve to stop these evolving villains while slowly gaining many allies on his quest for justice.

  • Bruce Wayne/Batman (voiced by Damien Haas) - the focused and brave yet sometimes cold CEO of Wayne Enterprises who returns to Gotham after spending eight years traveling the world as he becomes the Batman, using his own ingenuity and trained combat skills to battle the rise of Gotham's many dangerous and sadistic villains, intending to stop crime on Gotham. He is also quite compassionate and believes that villains can redeem, while also pretending to be quite egotistical and flamboyant as Bruce Wayne but intending on using Wayne Enterprises to help people as well, truly caring for all life.

  • Alfred Pennyworth (voiced by Ray Chase) - Bruce's loyal yet cautious butler who traveled alongside Bruce during his eight-year voyage across the world as he is aware of his mission as the Batman, attempting to guide him into being a symbol of hope, sometimes being worried for his safety but is truly loyal to Bruce's crusade for justice. He once worked for the M16 as an agent and a medic, using his medical skills to help patch Bruce up after certain fights as well.
  • Commissioner James "Jim" Gordon (voiced by Keith David) - the skeptical and gruff yet brave and justice loving commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department who learns of the Batman and forms an eventual reluctant alliance with him, slowly starting to believe that the Batman is the key to saving Gotham from the grasp of criminals.
  • Barbara Gordon/The Oracle (voiced by Kimberly Brooks) - Gordon's intelligent and polite young paraplegic daughter, who is a great friend of Batman, and wishes to be as brave as he is in fighting crime, becoming a hacker known as the Oracle, attempting to aid Batman through her intellect, although she has no idea who Batman is.
  • Selina Kyle/Catwoman (voiced by Erica Lindbeck) - a seductive and elusive yet well-meaning cat-suited vigilante and professional thief wearing clawed gloves and wielding a whiplash for self-defense, as she occasionally encounters Batman; sometimes clashing with him, other times teaming up with him, having also a romantic tension with him, although she is extremely greedy and often fights for herself.
  • Det. Harvey "Harv" Bullock (voiced by Clancy Brown) - a gruff and hardboiled detective who works under Gordon as he despises caped vigilantes with a passion, having a more aggressive relationship with the Batman but is often forced to play nice with him, having a soft side and truly wants what's best for Gotham, even if he can't see eye to eye with Gordon.
  • Renee Montoya (voiced by Stephanie Beatriz) - a hot-headed yet disciplined and well-meaning officer who works for Gordon, as she is far more trusting of Batman than Bullock, often working with him to solve crimes, although she doesn't truly trust the Gotham police system. She also mentions to have a fiancée who knows well the meaning of keeping up appearances.
  • Waylon Jones (voiced by Imari Williams) - a man with a skin condition that makes him look like a monster who was initially blackmailed into working for the Penguin until Batman ended up saving Jones from the Penguin's debt and pulls some strings to get him a job at Wayne Enterprises as security, with Waylon starting to appreciate the Batman for giving him a new chance.
  • Dr. Victor Fries/Mr. Freeze (voiced by Robbie Daymond) - a tragic scientist who lost his wife Nora to an incurable disease and soon mutated into a being made out of ice as he initially started as a villain, stealing tech to attempt to find a way to preserve Nora. However, during his first encounter with Batman, the Batman ends up seeing into his soul and convinces him to step down, becoming a hermit attempting to cure Nora, with Batman attempting to help find a cure for her.
  • Jack Ryder (voiced by Jack DeSena) - an egotistical and cocky professional reporter who likes to overly sensationalize the Batman, sometimes being a target to a plethora of supervillain attacks, although he has somewhat of a good soul, even if he can often be a jerk and cares more about his own skin than anyone else.
  • Zatanna Zatara (voiced by Ashley Johnson) - a playful and flirtatious stage magician who is an actual sorceress as she occasionally works with Batman on special team up missions, with her always keeping on a flamboyant show woman like performance and sometimes likes to playfully flirt and mess with Batman's stoic nature.
  • Victor Sage/The Question (voiced by Michael Emerson) - a calm and methodical detective who wears a full face mask to cover up his entire face as he encountered Bruce Wayne during his eight year world trip, having taught him how to be a better detective as he occasionally ventures into Gotham to solve his own cases, now working with the Batman.

Antagonists[]

  • The Joker (voiced by Josh Keaton) - the insane and sadistic but chaotic "clown prince of crime" who learns of the Batman's existence and becomes obsessed with him, believing that they are two sides of the same coin, with him being feared by the Batman thanks to one factor, Batman has no idea what the Joker would do next.
  • Ra's al Ghul (voiced by Naveen Andrews) - the ruthless and tyrannical yet shockingly calm immortal leader of the League of Shadows, a clan of ninjas and assassins assemble for the purpose of destroying their enemies and establish a new order for the world. He is also the man who trained Bruce Wayne and eventually arrives to Gotham during season 2, wanting to turn Batman against Gotham, wanting to turn him into his heir.
  • Harvey Dent/Two-Face (voiced by Alejandro Saab) - Bruce's childhood best friend and a flamboyant yet justice seeking attorney who ends up forming an alliance with the Batman to attempt and stop the rise of villains. At the season 1 finale, Harvey gets horrifically scarred and goes mad, deeming himself the one and only judge, jury and executioner, becoming a dangerous vigilante and Batman's most dangerous threat. During season 2, Dent starts to become a mob boss as well, believing only he can keep the criminal underworld in check, also becoming obsessed with duality and luck.
  • Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin (voiced by Taliesin Jaffe) - the flamboyant yet anger prone disfigured owner of the prestigious Iceberg Lounge who is also a rising mob boss, owning many trick umbrellas and other weapons of war, having an obsession with power and proving that he could be a game changer in Gotham, seeing Batman as another freak just like him.
    • Jay and Lark/The Kabuki Twins (voiced by Erika Ishii and Judy Alice Lee) - two former members of the Yakuza who were found by Cobblepot and recruited into becoming waitresses at the Iceberg Lounge yet also masked enforcers known as the Kabuki Twins as they do a brunt of Cobblepot's plans, being masters of knife-based combat and can be somewhat dangerous for Batman to face.
  • Edward Nashton/The Riddler (voiced by Jack Quaid) - an intellectual yet egotistical and insane criminal mastermind with a strong passion for riddles and puzzles, as he seeks to prove himself smarter than others with nigh difficult riddles, often throwing a tantrum when he himself is outsmarted, especially by Batman, seeing himself as the Batman's ultimate intellectual rival.
  • Dr. Pamela Isley/Poison Ivy (voiced by Marisha Ray) - a nature loving yet aggressive scientist who used to work for GothCorp before mutating into a half-plant hybrid as she now has plans on rebuilding Gotham as a city built around nature, seeing the rich and powerful as diseases that must be exterminated. She can control plants and developed a toxin that can enslave the minds of anyone she kisses.
  • Michael Lane/Azrael (voiced by Gabe Kunda) - an enigmatic and elusive as well as violent and pious vigilante who was created by the Order of St. Dumas to be their own personal Batman, having his own grudge at the Wayne family for Thomas failing to save his father, as he clashes with Batman on multiple occasions and deems the Batman as too weak to serve real justice.
  • Jervis Tech/Mad Hatter (voiced by Alex Rochon) - an intellectual yet insane and creepy mechanical genius who is obsessed with the tale of Alice and Wonderland, as he sees the world as Wonderland, and himself as the Mad Hatter, using high-tech brainwashing weapons for one mission, to find his Alice, although he causes other Wonderland themed crimes and finds the Batman to be an annoying pain in his side.
  • Preston Payne/Clayface (voiced by Patrick Seitz) - a disfigured and tragic scientist who was born with a disorder that made him horrific and terrifying, having developed a serum that transforms him into a creature made out of clay. He has the power to corrode anything he touches and can transform his limbs into weapons, being obsessed with his transformation into an ever-deeper monster, wanting to return to normal no matter what, being willing to hurt and destroy to do so, having to deal with the fact that he is incapable of changing how he looks, hating that he is eternally a monster.
  • Maximillian "Maxie" Zeus (voiced by Travis Willingham) - a prideful former historian who believes himself to be the resurrection of Zeus as he becomes a mob boss, creating mechanical weapons and traps themed after Greek mythology as he sees Batman as Typhon, the bane of Olympus, and wants to destroy Batman before he destroys "his empire".
  • Shame (voiced by Will Arnett) - a charming yet truly cowardly Western themed bounty hunter and mercenary who inspired his entire theme around cowboy shows of the past as he is often hired by mob bosses and other villains to do certain tasks but can be quite cowardly when he loses control over a situation, being scared of the Batman and constantly scheming of ways to avoid him.
  • James Craddock/Gentleman Ghost (voiced by Ben Starr) - a charismatic and flamboyant ghost from Victorian England who had awoken in Gotham City as he chooses to become a thief and criminal mastermind, using his intangibility and power to possess people to commit crimes, becoming a rather strange and odd threat for Batman to face.
  • Paul Dekker/Crazy Quilt (voiced by Eric Bauza) - an insane former artist who steals a Wayne Industries developed helmet that allows him to fire out many types of lights with different effects as he wants to become rich and famous and to show that he is respected by all, becoming a recurring but somewhat annoying threat to Batman.
  • Mary Dahl/Baby Doll (voiced by Laura Bailey) - a former childhood sitcom star who has a condition that makes her incapable of physically aging from nine years old as she snaps and becomes a criminal, wanting to bring back her fame, with Batman feeling some mercy to her thanks to her being forced to stay a child forever.
