As the Sun Sets is a rewrite of The House of Night by Hyperus18/RegalHyperus as part of his Bad YA Literature Hero Swap series.
Premise[]
The House of Night is frequently criticized for being a waste of a good plot, which is ruined by romantic plot tumors, dated stereotypes, and an insufferable, judgemental Mary Sue that is the main protagonist. RegalHyperus' solution? Replace Zoey with Tomori Shirakumo, and watch in awe as the continuity reboots itself with a setting update AND an Adaptational Location Change, and a new cast takes the helm at the Los Angeles House of Night.
BYALHS-M-WNP-PCR
Bad YA Literature Hero Swap - Main Series, Wholly New Plot, Partial Continuity Reboot
Plot[]
Just as a Tracker Marks a 16-year-old Zoey Redbird with a crescent moon on her forehead, she regenerates into (read: gets replaced with) Tomori Shirakumo, who enters the House of Night and learns that she is no average fledgling. She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess Nyx because Word of God stated that he wanted to make Tomori Nyx's chosen one, done right.
Characters[]
Tomori Shirakumo[]
AKA: Tomori Yuunagi
A Tailored Replacement OC created specifically to replace Zoey as an anti-Zoey. Tomori is an aroace and celibate ball of sunshine.
"Nyx's chosen one done right", who earns Nyx's backing with merit and not plot armor.
Instead of being A-ya's reincarnation, Tomori is Kaguya-hime reincarnated.
Aroace celibacy aside, she's confident, optimistic, friendly, kind, determined, self-assured, upbeat, and energetic (not Blaze (Arknights) or Beidou (Genshin Impact) in terms of personality, but not "shonen protagonist" hot-headed, but mostly "shoujo protagonist with an actual backbone"
Amber Barnett[]
Basis: Amber (Genshin Impact), Yoimiya Naganohara (Genshin Impact)
Replaces Kayla Robinson; elevated to deuteragonist.
Amber is the anti-Kayla: instead of a judgmental, shallow “BFF” who abandons Zoey the second her forehead glows, Amber is ride-or-die — exuberant, cheerful, fire-themed, and emotionally aware.
She’s modeled off the spirit of Genshin’s Amber (loyal, peppy, team-first) and Yoimiya (creative, kind, explosive energy), with added realist pragmatism. Amber doesn’t tolerate hypocrisy. She burns it down.
“We don’t leave our own behind. That’s not something fire forgets.”
Chance Lewis-Rowe[]
Basis: Yanqing (Honkai: Star Rail), Rindo Kanade (NEO The World Ends with You)
Replaces Jared (Kayla’s BF from Marked chapter 1); elevated to tritagonist.
Chance is the tactician of the trio — stoic on the outside, deeply principled inside. If Tomori is the protagonist and Amber is the spark, Chance is the compass. Quietly confident, he's never the loudest in the room — but when he speaks, people listen.
“Fire burns fast. Wind dances free. But ice? Ice is patient.”
He’s emotionally intelligent, sarcastically dry, and loyal to a fault. Unlike Zoey’s Jared, Chance isn’t here for cheap drama or romantic leftovers — he’s a ride-or-die strategist with a sword’s clarity and no tolerance for plot tumor nonsense.
Neferet (Jamila Kamil incarnation)[]
Basis: Golden Cheese Cookie (Cookie Run: Kingdom), Horus (ancient Egyptian mythology), Horus (Echocalypse)
Neferet (Emily Wheiler incarnation)’s face-heel turn was adapted out to make way for the Obsidian Legion, an actual villain faction. And yes, the Kamil incarnation is Egyptian-American because I do not allow cultural appropriation here.
Neferet remains in name only, as the person who took the moniker here is a way different person. Neferet’s villainous roles have been split amongst the Obsidian Legionaries, and Kalona and family are basically preserved for “Failed Attempt at Drama” purposes.
In case you see Neferet not being Neferet, that’s right. A different person took up the name entirely.
In the original narrative, Neferet's descent into darkness was marked by trauma and vengeance. In this reimagined version, all NSFW and NSFL elements have been adapted out. Any instances of abuse have been addressed within the story, with perpetrators facing justice, ensuring a respectful and empowering narrative.
Neferet (Jamila Kamil) emerges as a beacon of wisdom and strength, guiding fledgling vampyres with compassion and integrity. Her transformation signifies a shift from a past marred by pain to a future illuminated by purpose.
Ankh the falcon[]
Retroactively replaces Skylar because Neferet (Kamil) was based on Horus, NOT Bastet!

Acknowledgements[]
Like all Bad YA Literature Hero Swap fics, As the Sun Sets was inspired by The Hill of Swords and In Flight by Gabriel Blessing.
A Refresher on Gabriel Blessing's Shirou Emiya Hero Swaps[]
The Familiar of Zero is frequently criticized as being a waste of a good plot which is ruined by fanservice and harem antics (the anime especially) and an excessively abusive relationship between a tsundere with a hair-trigger temper and an idiot of a male lead who doesn't know how to keep his mouth shut around her. Gabe's solution? Replace Saito with Shirou Emiya, and watch in awe as the Belligerent Sexual Tension vanishes, the harem dynamics disappear almost entirely, and Louise is Rescued from the Scrappy Heap and develops into a character who is not only likable but admirable. While it has its share of flaws, it proved successful enough to spawn a massive following of fics with similar "Replace Saito with _____" premises.
He later does the same thing with Sekirei with In Flight. With Shirou having the experience of partipating in another secret tournament, he's much more competent, serious, and prepared than Minato, the story is much different than Sekirei. It also made the reunion of Kusano and Shiina happen much earlier, made Akitsu an official Sekirei, and saved Chiho before Uzume's main/canon death. Also, with how the story's progressing, it has lessened the chance of Shirou becoming Archer. With more action and badassery (courtesy of Shirou), it won't be going too far if one says it's better than the original. It seems it will end in a different way than the original.
