An era of talking animals is about to get bigger.

Animaland 2 is an upcoming 2029 computer-animated science-fiction adventure comedy film directed by Pierre Perifel. The sequel to 2025's Animaland, it is the 34th film produced by Sony Pictures Animation and is distributed by Sony, produced by Jared Stern, Clark Spencer, and Tyson Heese, written by Ash Marron, Chris Buck, and Etan Cohen, and from a screenplay by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The film stars returning voice cast members including Andy Samberg, Will Arnett, Barry Keoghan, Jacob Tremblay, Xochilt Gomez, Charlie Day, Anna Faris, Josh Brolin, Amy Poehler, Jordan Peele, Keegan Michael-Key, Jack Black, and Adam Arkin, alongside new cast members Gael Garcia Bernal, Oscar Issac, Anya Taylor-Joy, Bill Hader, Ryan Reynolds, Idris Elba, Alan Tudyk, Joaquin Phoenix, Alfred Molina, Jason Momoa, and Mickey Rourke.

A sequel was discussed at Sony Pictures Animation during the film's marketing and was greenlit after the film's box office success. Most of the producing and writing crew returned for the film, but Akiva Schaffrer, director of the first film, and James Gunn, producer and co-writer of the first film also, did not return for the sequel, so Pierre Perifel, director of Dreamworks Animation's The Bad Guys, and Etan Cohen, writer of said film, were approached by Sony to replace Schaffrer and Gunn. They inmediately accepted, stating that they were fans of the first film. The crew rooted for a fitting follow-up story to the original, introducing new concepts and characters while expanding those previously introduced in the first film. Most of the voice cast from the original film returned for the sequel, and new cast members joined the film, including Oscar Issac, who was set to voice a character in the first film but got cut.

Animaland 2 was theatrically released on August 1, 2029 in the United States, before a general release in August 15. The film received positive reviews from critics and audiences, who praised it's story, voice acting, expanded story and setting, humor, and musical score, with some critics deeming it superior to the original. It grossed even more than the first film, grossing $891 million against a high budget of $240 million, becoming SPA's highest-grossing film. A third film was released in 2034, while a videogame set between the events of these films, titled Animaland: Fantastic Flux!, was released on 2032.

Synopsis[]

Four years after the events of the first film, Dippy (Andy Samberg) continues growing on the Animal Buds as it's members, including Elias (Will Arnett), Butcher (Barry Keoghan), Mackie (Jacob Tremblay), and Whitey (Xochilt Gomez), are excited for the next step for the Buds' evolution, specially with the arrival of new animals at Jeff's Zooland, including a poddle moth like Withey named Antony (Gael Garcia Bernal), a wolf named Donna (Anna Taylor-Joy), and a rabbit named Mumby (Oscar Issac). But as it turns out, the consequences from the Buds' conflict against Rattie (Josh Brolin) are left across the Zooland, resulting into the Zooland being forced to go on a massive merge-in with another Zooland inhabited by both likable and dangerous new characters, among them being Count Doone (Joaquin Phoenix), an old enemy of Dippy's vulture guardian (Adam Arkin). Now, the Buds must adjust to this new life and setting and foil Doone's mysterious plans.
