- "My quest for equality began many years ago. When I was a boy, my family and I lived on a small farm. We weren't rich and none of us were benders. This made us very easy targets for a shinobi firebender who extorted my father. One day, my father confronted this man, but when he did that shinobi took my family from me. Then, he took my face. I've been forced to hide behind a mask ever since."
- ―- Amon's speech to his Equalist followers
Amon, born Noatak, was the charismatic and mysterious leader the anti-bender revolutionary group known as the Equalists. Through his organization, his goal was to introduce full equality for everyone by ridding the world of benders. Nimble, agile, and an expert at body techniques, Amon was fearless regardless of who he faced. Claiming he was chosen by the spirits to remove a person's bending, Amon was secretly a charlaitan and an actual bender from the Northern Water Clan.
Noatak was born in the Northern Water Tribe to Yakone and Innoko, being the older brother of Arnook by three years. As he grew older, Noatak was a good-natured child who looked to help his younger brother and who wanted all people to be treated equally and fairly.
After Noatak and Tarrlok discovered they were waterbenders at age 9, Yakone trained them to hone and improve their skills ruthlessly. When Noatak was ten, Yakone took the brothers to what he said was a hunting away from the Land of Water, where he revealed to them he was a powerful crime lord in Republic City, at the Land of Fire, revealing his knowledge over the forbidden technique known as bloodbending. Claiming his clan had the strongest bloodbending kekkei genkai in history, he intended to make his son a bloodbender of the highest caliber to further his crime syndicate.
At every full moon, Yakone taught Noatak his secret Psychic Blood Puppetry on animals, such as yaks and wolves. With his newfound abilities, Noatak was also able to master Yakone's unique technique by the age of fourteen. A prodigy, Noatak came to carry the burden of his father's expectations through the years, and thus he turned into a cold and detached man.
